9th Meeting of the European Policy Planners' Network (PPN)
The Internet and Radicalisation
14 - 15 June 2011
Stockholm
Hosted by the Swedish Ministry of Justice, the 9th meeting of the European Policy Planners' Network on Countering Radicalisation and Polarisation (PPN) took place on 15-16 June in Stockholm. The theme for the meeting was ‘The Internet and Radicalisation’ with sessions covering the role of the internet in extremist activities (including recruitment, coordination and planning); the internet as a space for extremist propaganda; and the use of the internet in developing and disseminating counter-narratives.
Over 20 policy planners from PPN member governments, as well as messaging experts, gathered to discuss these issues and share best practice. The group had the privilege of welcoming Birgitta Ohlsson, the Swedish Minister for Democracy Policy and European Affairs, who addressed the group on her government's policy and practice in the area of counter-radicalisation. The meeting also provided an opportunity for PPN members to give their input into the development of the Policy Exchange Portal (PEP), an EU Commission-funded online library of policy documents, case studies and research papers in this area.
In advance of the meeting, the ISD also produced a working paper on the subject which can be downloaded here.
