Muslims in the European Mediascape Expert Meeting
Expert Meeting
19 April 2010
London
The first meeting of the 'Muslims in the European Mediascape' research project was held on the 19 April which unfortunately coincided with the volcanic ash crisis which prevented the German participants from attending. Although their presence was greatly missed, the meeting proved to be an excellent opportunity to lay the conceptual and methodological foundations for this major pan-European research project.
This joint research project is a partnership between the Institute, the Vodafone Foundation Germany and the British Council’s ‘Our Shared Europe Programme’. It seeks to examine the complexity of media use in an increasingly diverse Europe. Building on a small-scale pilot research project conducted by ISD in cooperation with the Vodafone Foundation Germany in 2009, the research will investigate the distinctiveness of Muslim media use and production and its relationship to inter-ethnic attitudes in Europe.
The Institute has gathered a distinguished group of academics who will continue to meet in order to steer the project over the next three years. To date, these include Natalie Fenton, Professor Lilie Chouliaraki, Dilwar Hussain, Kerem Oektem, Tufyal Choudhury, Rachel Briggs, Gilles Kepel, Riva Kastoryano, Simon Cottle, Jean F. Tchernia, Luis Martinez, Claire Frachon, Faz Hakim and Rachel Briggs.
